Councils in the Northwest Region of Cameroon, have been encouraged to take crucial steps towards reforming and improving road infrastructure management.
It was during a two-day workshop organised by the Ministry of Public Works, from the 17-18 of July 2024. It held at the conference room of the Regional Delegation for Public Works for the Northwest, Bamenda.
The working session focused on encouraging the prioritisation of projects under council management for the preparation of the 2025 budget.It grouped together all Mayors from the different municipalities, the Senior Divisional Officer, Simeon Chi Asamandam, workers from the Ministry of Public Works headed by the Director General of Matgenie, Tikum Emmanuel, the Mayor of Kumbo Council, the Deputy Mayors, Mayor of Misaje Council, Mayor of Nkambe Council, the regional delegates, Mayor of Jakiri council, divisions delegates, MINEPAT and MINDDEVEL.
Based on the prioritisation criteria presented during the two-day workshop, projects identified by various councils were ranked in order of preference and it was previewed to carry on the completion of ongoing projects, treat possible traffic disruption points, opening up production basins, and accelerating inter municipality projects.The amount of the phases to be programmed in 2025 was previewed.
Under the basis of importance, 30 ongoing projects were identified including bridges, among the projects 28 projects technical files are available, and 2 project contracts were withdrawn and transferred to another company. Some of the projects identified are, Nkambe-Berabe-Ako road of 60,00km long, rehabilitation of communal roads in Bakinchine-Akwento-Ako, 20,000km, Buku-Buku up 12.600km, Buku-up-Daka 6,000km, opening of TunganTungande-Jevi-Mbande road 9,500km, rehabilitation of communal road Nkambe-Tumbo-Bebegama-Mayokila-Bumbu of 31.500km, Binka-Mayo-Binka, 17.500km, Nkambe-Moh-Konchep 15,000km, rehabilitation of Nwa-Tong road 25,000km, Kom-Mayo-Binka 32,000km.
Over 60 new projects were selected as part of the main objective to update data on the state of the road network and prioritise interventions on roads for the preparation of the 2025 budget. Some project studies have been completed while others studies are still ongoing.
Looking at the amount estimates, projects from Kumbo council stands at 180,678,000 million FCFA, Jakiri council project amount to 2,598,851,033 billion FCFA, 511,000,000 million FCFA, Mbiame council 464,872,167 FCFA, Nkum Council 639,400,000 million FCFAFCFA and Nkor Council 1,274,050,000 billion FCFA.
It should be noted that the entire length of road in the Northwest region is 10,514km, the total length of paved road is 466km and total length of earth roads 10,047km.
